IH Doha Teaching Knowledge Course, October 2015

On the 17th and 24th of October 2015, International House Doha delivered the Teaching Knowledge Course (TKC) to faculty members of the Academic Bridge Program (ABP) in Qatar Foundation. This was part of ABP’s efforts to meet its re-accreditation requirements by The Commission of English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).

The TKC is an introductory teaching methodology course that introduces new and experienced teachers to the current best practice in teaching methodology. The course content mirrors Cambridge University’s Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) syllabus.

To ensure the participants experienced the full benefits of the TKC, our very own Director of Studies, Mrs. Rebecca Frey, delivered the course content using the actual methods she was aiming to expose them to including methodologies such as ‘task-based learning’ and ‘guided discovery’.

The feedback was fantastic! One of the participants told us it was the best professional development she’d had in many years. Others reported going straight from the training room to modify their lesson plans to implement the new strategies in their upcoming classes. ABP were extremely pleased that their faculty members learnt practical information that they can actually use in the classroom. Rebecca even demonstrated one of the teaching methods with a Maths lesson illustrating that the TKC is not exclusive to only English language teachers, but can also appeal to the wider teaching community.

Robert Campbell, the EFL Department Supervisor said, “Maintaining our accreditation is extremely important to us, and the TKT course helped our faculty members meet the rigorous standards that are required. In addition to this, the teachers saw true value in the course.”
