Al Shamal Preparatory School for Boys has invited us to run a teacher training workshop for them!
On November 19, 2015 IH Doha’s dedicated Teacher Trainer and Academic Director Rebecca Frey was honored to run a training seminar on ‘Learning styles and multiple intelligences’ for the amazing teachers of Al Shamal Preparatory School for Boys in Doha. The content of this workshop is taken from the International House Certificate in Teaching Younger Learners and Teens (IHCYLT), an IHWO certificate course which is moderated by Cambridge English Language Assessment.
During the seminar English teachers looked at learning styles and how we receive information including two practical examples: a running dictation and a TPR demonstration. TPR here stands for Total Physical Response and is a language teaching method developed by James Asher, a professor emeritus of psychology at San José State University. It is based on the coordination of language and physical movement. In TPR, instructors give commands to students in the target language, and students respond with whole-body actions. The method is an example of the comprehension approach to language teaching.
Traditionally, schools use logical and verbal intelligences to teach languages – English in this case. However, it is also possible to teach English through the use of other types of intelligences. Al Shamal preparatory school English teachers looked at multiple intelligences and the different ways that we can process information during the professional development workshop we ran for them.
This workshop aimed to give the participants a solid understanding of both learning styles and multiple intelligences and provide practice in considering these when planning lessons. By the end of the workshop, teachers were able to recognise preferred learning styles that their students have and create some new, motivating activities to address these differences.
If your school/centre has more than 10 English language teachers, we’re coming to give you a free teacher training workshop!
